2020.07.15 Outlook immediately crashing on open after patching last night

Did outlook start not opening this morning? Looks like it's a Microsoft error. Like many of us, you might be getting tired of tech companies testing things on the public...

In this case, the failed update seemed to have come as a part of Microsoft Office 365 (which uses a separate update system from WSUS if you are on a managed network) and may have bypassed your update server and the controls on it.

Credit where credit is due... Thank you Angus for pointing out this thread:

Basically, all you need to do is force office to run an older version. So something like this:

  1. click the start button
  2. type cmd and hit the <ENTER> key
  3. Paste the line of code below and press <ENTER> key again and wait for it to update - you will be prompted to saveyour work before office reloads to roll back the change.

The "code":

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun\OfficeC2RClient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.12827.20470

Office should update again when they release a new fix. But if this happens again you can likely safely repeat the process.
